“Advocacy is speaking or action on behalf of oneself or others, or on behalf of a particular issue.”
- Paul Williams
Advocacy is a chance for you to voice your real life experience and concerns. Only people, themselves, can truly speak out in support of their well being. Speaking out can impact the actions, attitudes, hearts, and minds of the community around you. Informing the community is a vital step in achieving a more equal system, a system which fosters respect for the individual being.
The corner stone to advocacy is communication. Get your message across as effectively as possible. There are a number of productive ways to communicate with the community and community leaders to stimulate systems change. Communication can include written materials, public meetings, video and audio, and other media. Below are avenues you can pursue to advocate on issues you are concerned with.
Letter-Writing
