BUSINESS ACCESSIBILITY GUIDE
Our Civil and Human Rights Task force is very active in surveying businesses to learn how well they meet the standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Survey results are reported in four areas: Approach, Entry, Accommodations and Restrooms as described below.
Approach
- Number and location of accessible parking
- Size of parking spaces and access aisles
- Route to door
Entry
- Width of door
- Force to open door
- Threshold height
- Maneuvering space at door / type of hardware
Accommodations
- Width of aisles
- Accessible counters / waiting area
- Accessible tables
- Interior doors – size, maneuvering space
Restrooms
- Entrance – force to open, maneuvering space
- Accessible toilet – grab bars, space, dispensers
- Turning and approach space at fixtures
- Accessible sink
Each area is rated Green, Yellow or Red. A Green rating means that all features surveyed for that area meet the ADA Standards. A Yellow rating means that one item listed above does not meet the ADA Standards. A Red rating means that two or more items do not meet the ADA Standards. A brief explanation describing deficient feature(s) follows Yellow and Red ratings. When Yellow or Red ratings are present, each individual will need to determine if they can access the business.
